Description

The MiG-19 was the first Soviet supersonic fighter developed in the early 1950s. Licence production of its clear-weather fighter model was started in China in 1961 under the designation Shenyang J-6 and in total 3,300 aircraft were built. It was a single-seat, all-metal monoplane powered by two WP-6 (a licence-built Mikulin RD-9B) turbojets and designed for interception, close air support and limited fighter-bomber roles.

Besides the Chinese Air Force, Pakistan can be regarded as the biggest foreign user of the Chinese models. Other operators of the Shenyang J-6 day fighter variants (export designation being the F-6) were Albania, Bangladesh, Congo, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Cambodia (Kampuchea), North Korea, North Vietnam, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Yemen and Zambia.
